Exploring the challenge of working with and confronting typecasting in a special seminar, plus free Headshot Healthchecks, discounts & theatre vouchers up for grabs Surviving Actors 2018.

This Saturday 3rd Feb I’m back at Surviving Actors for the – count ’em – 7th year running.

It’s always a highlight of the calendar, with seminars, workshops and 1-2-1s, plus a bustling trade hall filled with publishers, casting software providers, voice coaches, showreel editors, and, yes, even photographers, all ready to give you special offers and discounts. And probably some sweets too.

It all adds up to vibrant day that provides much-needed inspiration at the end of January; I love hatting to actors and engaging with what concerns them when they’re booking shoots, but more broadly, you can see people leave inspired and ready to make fresh efforts in the coming year.

I explain why it’s such a good event in the video above, and just to prove I think the work Felicity and Lianne do is so valuable,  this is my fourth year of sponsoring the event.

‘Me or Who I Can Be?’ Challenging Typcasting

This year my seminar is at 12.15pm and features 2 brilliant casting directors, discussing how actors can confront the age-old conundrum of typecasting.Featuring the insights from top Casting Directors Rachel Sheridan and Kirsty Kenner, who work across film and TV, we will be tackling the eternal acting quandary:

You get the girl next door but could play Medea; you’re the best friend never the romantic lead; you are seen for classical roles not contemporary ones; you always play edgy, when you know your comic timing is spot on.

In an industry that understands actors as ‘types,’ it can be hard enough to work out exactly how your combination of energy, physicality, appearance and acting aesthetic translates into your casting, while getting work, let alone challenging that casting.

And as constrained budgets for casting and production – especially in TV and film – seem increasingly to dictate that the industry wants actors to ‘be’ rather than to act, how can you realistically showcase your range and potential, while also promoting your core casting effectively?

We’ll be discussing how the promotional resources actors pour their hard-earned cash into actually get used at the business end of things: by agents and casting directors. And we’ll be looking for practical advice to help you promote yourself better in 2017 and beyond.
